김정은, 트럼프 판문점에서 역사적 회동
History has been made.
U.S. President Donald Trump met with Kim Jong-un at the border village of Panmunjeom in the Demilitarized Zone today.
We have our Kan Hyeong-woo at the Unification Bridge, on the road to the border village of Panmunjeom.
Hyeong-woo, tell us about Trump's trip to the DMZ.
Da-eun, indeed it was historic to say the least. U.S. President Donald Trump crossed the Military Demarcation Line at the Joint Security Area
and shook hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on the North Korean side of the border,... becoming the first U.S. leader to do so.
Kim, in return, crossed the border onto South Korean soil.
And there, Trump invited the North Korean leader to the White House.
"A lot of positive things are happening and I’m glad you’re here to see it. Tremendous positivity. Really great things are happening in many places. We liked each other from day one and that is really important."
"In crossing the border, I think President Trump showed extraordinary determination to move beyond the troubled past and into a better future."
The two leaders were joined by Presient Moon for a brief moment before going into the Freedom House on the southern side of the border.
A closed-door bilateral meeting between Trump and Kim lasted about an hour and Trump again stressed that he is in no rush. He said he and Kim Jong-un have a great relationship... and that they had a really good meeting.
So we don't know what these two leaders discussed but indeed it was a monumental point in the history of both the U.S. and North Korea.
But before Kim and Trump met, President Moon took a DMZ tour with the U.S. leader.
Tell us more about that.
Before meeting with the North Korean leader,... Presidents Moon and Trump went to Observation Post Ouellette just south of the border line separating the two Koreas,... where U.S. Presidents have gone when visiting the DMZ in the past.
"This is the first time in history that the presidents of South Korea and the U.S. have been here at the DMZ together."
"I want to thank you very much. You’re a very special group of people. I just look at how healthy and strong and good we really appreciate it we appreciate it very much."
Moon and Trump spent brief moments meeting with American and South Korean troops at Camp Bonifas,... thanking them for their dedication and service.
Trump has left the DMZ on a helicopter to get to Osan Air Base... where he is going to speak to the U.S. troops. It's the last thing on his official schedule for this two-day visit to South Korea. We will more updates on that at our later newscast. Da-eun.
