Trump praises power of social media to bypass 'fake news filter'

US President Donald Trump hailed the social media platform Twitter, saying people go "crazy" when he tweets there, compared to when he publishes a press release. The remark came during a 'social media summit' that Trump held at the White House on Thursday.

"We hardly do press releases anymore because if I put out on social media a statement, like I'm going to in a little while and something totally unrelated but a very important statement, now they're going crazy," explained the US president. "If I put it out on social media it's like an explosion," he added.

The US president also said that social media allows "journalists and influencers" to bypass the "fake news filter."

During the summit, Trump repeatedly bragged about his large Twitter following. He also made light of the spelling mistakes he makes on the social media platform. "I'm actually a good speller but everyone said that the fingers aren't as good as the brain," he stated.

The 'social media summit' went ahead without representatives from tech giants Facebook, Twitter and Google. Attendees reportedly include social media personalities and leaders from conservative think tanks.
