Britain should tell UK President Donald Trump should tell Donald Trump to calm down and go for a game of golf, and then reappoint Sir Kim Darroch as British ambassador to the US, according to former foreign office minister Lord Howell.
The Tory grandee made the tongue-in-cheek suggestion as peers pressed the Government over the resignation of the UK’s top diplomat in Washington DC following a transatlantic row. Sir Kim announced he was quitting his Washington post early as it had become “impossible” for him to carry out his duties effectively in the wake of the furore triggered by the leaking of his diplomatic cables to London, which were highly critical of the Trump White House.
It led to a wave of abuse from Mr Trump in which he branded Sir Kim a “very stupid guy” and a “pompous fool” and said the administration would have no further dealings with him.
Speaking at Westminster, Lord Howell, who until recently was chairman of the Lords International Relations Committee, said: “As the president of the United States added a few rather gratuitous and personal remarks about our own Prime Minister, shouldn’t we just stand back and tell him to go and relax and maybe play a game of golf.
