The UK has raised the threat to British merchant ships in the Gulf to the highest possible level with the risk of attack considered to be "critical".
The step was taken after Iranian boats tried to impede a British oil tanker before being driven off by a Royal Navy ship.
The message from Donald Trump to Britain was essentially "I told you so" as the incoming head of the U.S military outlined his plans to create a coalition to protect shipping in the region.
