After President Trump attacked this ambassador unrelentingly, his job seemed untenable and he has resigned. Funny thing is, all investigations were looking into who leaked the private documents , except into him as he did his job.
For the UK and USA and their friendly relationship to continue though, something had to be done before this story spiralled out of control and set relations back between two allies.
