George H W Bush - the 41st President of the United States - has died at the age of 94.
In a statement his children, who of course include the 43rd President George W Bush, called him "a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for".
During his time in the White House, he led the first Gulf War against Saddam Hussein - but lost the presidency after only one term - in part because of an election pledge that came to haunt him: "read my lips - no new taxes".
Our diplomatic editor Dominic Waghorn looks back on the life of a man who began a political dynasty.
